Work rules,
without the fog.

Remote work for a US employer has a designed legal route — and it isn't the retirement visa. Self-employment means income-based social security quotas. Here are the 2026 numbers.

Last verified: 8 July 2026
The key numbers · 2026
  • €1,221/month × 14 = €17,094/year — minimum wage (SMI); SMI-level income is exempt from income tax
  • ~€200–590/month — self-employed (autónomo) social security quotas, by income bracket
  • €80/month — the reduced "tarifa plana" quota for new autónomos, first 12 months (verify current amount — some official calculators show ~€88 with the MEI surcharge)
  • 10.83% — unemployment rate, Q1 2026 (Cantabria 7.5% → Andalucía 14.7%)

Remote work for a US or Canadian employer

The designed route is the digital nomad permit under the 2022 startup law: work remotely for companies outside Spain (freelancers may take Spanish clients up to 20% of activity). Income requirement in 2026: €2,849/month (200% of SMI applied to the annual figure and divided by 12 — see the visa guide for why simply doubling the monthly SMI understates it).

Don't work remotely on the non-lucrative visa. The NLV authorises residence "without carrying out any labour or professional activity", and consulates — Washington explicitly — treat remote and online work as caught by the ban; Washington requires a notarised no-work affidavit. The rules do not sanction remote work on an NLV. If you plan to keep working, use the teleworker permit.

The minimum wage, and why it matters to you

The SMI is €1,221/month in 14 payments = €17,094/year in 2026 (RD 126/2026, +3.1% on 2025). It matters even if you'll never earn it: the digital nomad visa threshold is 200% of SMI, and family add-ons are 75% and 25% of it. Expect these numbers to move every year.

Going self-employed (autónomo)

Spain charges self-employed social security by real net income, in 15 brackets. The 2025 bracket tables were rolled over to 2026:

Net monthly incomeMonthly quota (2026, approx.)
≤ €670~€200
Middle bracketsRising by bracket — use the Seguridad Social simulator for your figure
> €6,000~€590

Legal footnote worth knowing: the first 2026 rollover decree failed its parliamentary vote in January 2026; the bracket tables were then applied by a March ministerial order (Orden PJC/297/2026). The numbers stand, but check the current instrument before relying on details.

Social security you've already paid

Spain has totalization agreements with both countries — the US–Spain agreement has been in force since 1988, and Canada–Spain has a convention plus a 1995 protocol. They coordinate coverage and let contribution periods in one country count toward benefit eligibility in the other, and prevent double social security contributions for temporary assignments. How your CPP, OAS or US Social Security is taxed in Spain is a separate question — see Tax & Finance.

The job market, honestly

Unemployment was 10.83% in Q1 2026 (INE) — down 80,600 year-on-year, but still high by North American standards, and uneven: 7.49% in Cantabria, 14.66% in Andalucía. For most readers of this site the realistic work paths are remote work for a foreign employer or self-employment, not the local job market.
