Germany runs on registration. One form — the Anmeldung — unlocks your bank account, tax ID and residence permit. Your driving licence swap depends on which US state issued it. Here's the practical layer, in the order you'll meet it.
Last verified: 8 July 2026Within two weeks of moving into any German home, you register the address at the local Bürgeramt (citizens' office). You'll need your passport and the landlord's confirmation form (Wohnungsgeberbestätigung). The registration certificate then unlocks, in roughly this order: your tax ID (arrives automatically by post), a bank account, your residence permit appointment, health insurance enrolment, and the broadcast-fee bill. Big-city appointment slots can be scarce — book the Anmeldung before you land if the city's portal allows it.
You may drive on your US or Canadian licence for 6 months after taking up residence. After that you need a German licence — and what that takes depends entirely on the issuing state or province:
| Your licence | What Germany requires |
|---|---|
| All Canadian provinces | Full exchange — no tests |
| 27 US states + Puerto Rico (incl. Texas, Pennsylvania, Illinois, Ohio) | Full exchange — no tests |
| 11 US states + DC (incl. Florida, North Carolina, Oregon, Tennessee, Connecticut, Minnesota, Missouri) | Theory test only (in German or English at many offices) |
| Remaining US states | Full German theory + practical test — plan on driving school and four figures in euros |
Standard EU rules, same as our Portugal pages: ISO-standard microchip first, then rabies vaccination at least 21 days before travel, then an EU animal health certificate endorsed by USDA-APHIS (US) or CFIA (Canada) within 10 days of arrival. Up to 5 pets per traveller, non-commercial. No quarantine. Dogs, cats and ferrets only under this regime — anything else needs separate rules.
Germany ranks #4 in the world for English proficiency (EF EPI 2025) — daily life in Berlin, Hamburg or Düsseldorf works in English. The state does not: the Ausländerbehörde, the Finanzamt, your health insurer and every official letter operate in German. Two practical consequences: budget for translation help or a German-speaking adviser in year one, and start lessons early — B1 German is the requirement if citizenship at year 5 is your plan.
