Germany,
decoded.

There is no German retirement visa — but there is a legal route for retirees. Citizenship takes 5 years and you keep your US or Canadian passport. Health insurance after 55 is the real hurdle. Here's the whole picture — from official sources, checked and dated.

Rule changes that matter

Three things that changed recently — and matter

Citizenship dropped to 5 years — and you keep your passport. The nationality reform in force since 27 June 2024 cut the residence requirement from 8 to 5 years and allows dual citizenship for everyone. Americans and Canadians no longer have to give up their citizenship to naturalise.
The 3-year "turbo" citizenship track is gone. The Bundestag voted to abolish the 3-year fast-track for exceptionally integrated applicants on 8 October 2025; the repeal took legal effect on 30 October 2025. Five years is now the standard for everyone. Anything you read promising citizenship in 3 years is out of date.
The EU's biometric border system is live. The Entry/Exit System (EES) began on 12 October 2025 and now counts your 90/180 Schengen days automatically. ETIAS pre-travel authorisation (€20) is expected in the last quarter of 2026.
