Pick your route honestly

Accept the headline: the UK has no retirement or passive-income visa (the old route closed in 2008), and you cannot live here on back-to-back visits — the rules expressly prohibit it Check citizenship by descent first — a UK-born parent usually makes you automatically British: no visa at all, just prove it and apply for a passport (Visas & Residency guide) Run the route quiz: UK-born grandparent and Canadian citizen → Ancestry visa (you must intend to work — paid, part-time, voluntary or self-employed all count; US citizens excluded). British or settled partner → partner visa (£29,000/yr minimum income, 2026; savings can substitute). Job offer at £41,700+ (2026) → Skilled Worker. Phase 2 · 12–6 months out

Apply, and plan tax before you land

Apply for your visa. 2026 fees and typical processing from abroad: Ancestry £726, ~3 weeks · Partner £2,064, ~12 weeks · Skilled Worker £819 (up to 3 years) or £1,618 (over 3), plus certificate of sponsorship · Innovator Founder £1,357 + £1,000 endorsement Have the IHS money ready at application — it is charged upfront with the visa fee, not monthly Gather and apostille your documents: income evidence for the partner route, sponsorship paperwork, marriage and birth certificates — order originals early Start the pet clock: microchip → rabies vaccination (12+ weeks old) → 21-day wait. Pets enter Great Britain as cargo on approved commercial routes, and the GB pet health certificate is only valid if you enter within 10 days of issue; dogs also need tapeworm treatment 24–120 hours before arrival (Living guide) See a cross-border tax adviser before you become UK-resident: new arrivals with 10+ years outside the UK get the FIG regime — 4 tax years with no UK tax on foreign income and gains (claimed annually via Self Assessment), and sequencing withdrawals around it matters US retirees: flag pension lump sums — HMRC changed its stance in March 2025 and now asserts UK tax on US-plan lump sums paid to UK residents. Contested area; specialist advice, not forum advice Canadians: plan for departure tax — emigrating triggers a deemed disposition of most assets at fair market value (CPP, OAS and RRSPs excluded; Form T1243)

Phase 3 · 6–0 months out

Rent first, buy later — and know the 2026 rules: rent in advance is capped at 1 month (paying a year upfront to offset no UK credit history is now illegal), so line up a UK guarantor, a guarantor service, or a landlord who accepts overseas-income referencing Budget the tenancy deposit — capped at 5 weeks' rent, plus a 1-week holding deposit while referencing runs Get removal quotes and book shipping — then decide what genuinely earns its place in a container Plan the big currency transfer: use an FCA-authorised e-money provider — client funds are safeguarded, not FSCS-protected, and rates beat retail banks. GBP/USD ≈ $1.32, GBP/CAD ≈ C$1.88 (1 Jul 2026; rates move daily) Make a driving plan. US licences cannot be exchanged: you may drive for 12 months from becoming resident, then you need a GB provisional plus theory and practical tests. Canadian licences can be exchanged (£43, ~3 weeks, within 5 years — automatic-only unless you can prove a manual test) Shortlist where to land with the Where to Live guide — average prices run from £163,190 in the North East to £552,655 in London (Apr 2026)

Phase 4 · Arrival & first 90 days

Plug into the system

Register with a GP in week one — it's free and requires no ID, proof of address or immigration status; your NHS number is issued on first registration (Healthcare guide) Apply for your National Insurance number Open a UK bank account — proof of UK address is the newcomer hurdle and requirements vary by bank, so start with your tenancy agreement Register with your local council for council tax (England Band D average: £2,392, 2026/27) Set up energy and broadband (~£36/mo for an average new full-fibre deal) — and buy the TV licence: £180/yr (2026/27) if you watch live TV or BBC iPlayer US licence holders: diarise your driving deadline — the 12-month clock started when you became resident. Book the theory test early. Canadians: send off the D1 exchange form (£43) Review your pension position. US: WEP is repealed (signed Jan 2025, retroactive to Jan 2024) — a UK State Pension no longer reduces your Social Security, and a US–UK totalization agreement can combine credits. Canadians: there is no Canada–UK benefit totalization, and OAS is only paid abroad with 20+ years of Canadian residence after 18 — check yours before you leave

The settlement rules are in motion. Today the main routes reach indefinite leave to remain at 5 years (3 on Innovator Founder) — but a 10-year "earned settlement" reform is pending, with a decision expected later in 2026, and the English requirement for settlement rises from B1 to B2 on 26 March 2027.
