Ireland,
decoded.

Retiring here on income alone takes €50,000 a year — per person. But if a parent or grandparent was born in Ireland, citizenship may already be yours for €278. English-speaking, EU passport, severe housing shortage. Here's the whole picture — from official sources, checked and dated.

2026 rule changes

Three things that changed recently — and matter

Rent controls went national on 1 March 2026. Rent Pressure Zones are gone; every private tenancy in the country is now capped at one increase a year of 2% or inflation, whichever is lower. New tenancies from that date come with 6-year minimum-duration protections. If you'll rent first — most movers should — this reform shapes your lease.
Budget 2026 left tax bands alone but raised PRSI. The 20% band stays at €44,000 (single); the 2% USC ceiling widened to €28,700; PRSI rose to 4.2%, rising again to 4.35% in October 2026. Retirees on Stamp 0 don't pay PRSI on foreign pensions — but tax residency still starts at 183 days.
Foreign Births Register processing is now Dublin-only. Irish embassies and consulates no longer handle citizenship-by-descent applications — everything goes through the Department of Foreign Affairs centrally, online first. Current processing: about 12 months once your complete documents are in. Start early.
